What are the benefits of sync and why does it require a subscription?
Smart Logbook includes sync functionality to back up your flights online. All your information is saved to the “cloud” in case your device is lost, broken, or stolen. Sync also makes it very easy to transfer your logbook when you upgrade to a new phone. Finally, sync enables you to use Smart Logbook on multiple devices (e.g. phone and tablet).
To sync your flights you’ll need to purchase a Smart Logbook sync subscription. You can choose a monthly or annual subscription. The first year is free when you sign up, and after that it’s less than $2 per month (US price). You can cancel anytime, of course. You can start a subscription via the Purchases screen in Smart Logbook:
iOS:
More > Purchase
Android:
≡ > Purchase info
One subscription is all you need to enable sync on all your devices. Just sign into Smart Logbook with the same account, and the subscription is shared automatically.
Although we think the sync subscription is well worth the money, for the convenience and peace of mind it gives you, don’t forget that it’s completely optional. You can use all the features in Smart Logbook (except sync) with just the one-time app purchase.
In case you’re wondering why sync requires a subscription, it’s because the sync functionality in Smart Logbook requires backend servers that must be online 24/7, which incurs ongoing costs and maintenance work. While we could make Smart Logbook entirely subscription-based and include sync by default, many of our customers have their own solutions for backing up their logbook, and they’ve told us they prefer to pay for the app just once.
